EXPERIENCES AS A RESEARCHER
  • Involved in an international research project among Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, the Netherlands and Finland, titled “Women, Work, Well-being, Waste and Sanitation: Action research on alternative strategies of environmental sanitation and waste management for improved health and socio-economic development in peri-urban coastal communities in South Asia” (2003-2006).

The project, led by IRC of the Netherlands and funded by EU, was initiated to introduce cost-effective, technically, socio-economically and environmentally innovative and replicable approaches to environmental sanitation and waste management in densely populated and economically fragile peri-urban communities of coastal areas in Bangladesh.

  • Actively involved in sanitation and water quality researches in the country; some important recent researches include:
    • Climate change impacts on small drinking water systems in Bangladesh
    • Ecological Sanitation in Bangladesh
    • Water quality of lakes, canals and peripheral rivers of Dhaka City
    • Arsenic and bacteriological quality of drinking water supplies in Chittagong city
    • Accumulation of arsenic in rice plant from arsenic contaminated irrigation water and its effects on nutrient content
    • Risk assessment of arsenic mitigation options – Phase II
    • Risk assessment of arsenic mitigation options – Phase I
    • Overview of arsenic mitigation water supply technologies
    • Rainwater harvesting: technical and social evaluation in two arsenic affected areas of Rajshahi
    • Groundwater pollution from on-site sanitation
    • Feasibility of small bore sewerage in Rajshahi city
    • Septic tank performance evaluation

The following researches were conducted and/ or supervised leading to postgraduate and graduate degrees:
