The ITN has been a joint initiative of the bilateral and multilateral external support agencies (ESAs’) and formed part of the UNDP/World Bank Water and Sanitation Program. The global network, originally based in Washington D.C., USA, had more than 18 member countries spreading over Asia, Africa and the South Pacific region. The Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA) provided financial support for the establishment and development of the ITN Center project in Bangladesh. The Center facilitated development of a human resource base and national capacity building in water supply and sanitation sector. As Curricula Development Specialist contributed in establishing a national network of engineering educational institutions that eventually brought about a breakthrough in the orientation of the water supply and sanitation course curricula from conventional to that matches reality. The Danish support has now been withdrawn and ITN-BUET has now become a regular center of the university.
